Your Wedding Program and Guest Book Show Your Style

By Robin R. Buckley Platinum Quality Author

Your wedding program can certainly help convey so much about you and your wedding day. Here are some ideas to help make your guest book fun and add to your wedding style. Couples will often include a photo of themselves on the cover, but that is just the beginning.

The wedding program is a wonderful place to let your guests know the names of the beautiful songs that you have chosen. It is also a place to share the meanings behind the rituals that will be taking place.

We have seen many mothers begin to cry when they read the beautiful words that the bride and groom have written in the program about them. It is also a place to honor all of the attendants, children, readers and officiates that participate in the ceremony. You can even include a special message to your guests for their attendance on your special day.

Some couples have included quotes from literature or a poem that is special to them. We have even seen lovely handkerchiefs included inside of the program for those teary moments that are sure to occur.

The back of the program is the perfect place to provide your new home address and contact information. That way your loved ones will be able to stay in touch in the future. You can also include here the website that your photographer will use to post your wedding photos so that all of your guests will be able to see your wedding pictures.

You can have them printed or make them yourself with software and pretty paper, but what ever you choose, makes it your style.

Guest books can also define your wedding style. If yours is a destination wedding, you might want to consider a beautiful coffee table picture book of the location of the wedding having guests simply find a page that they would like to leave their sentiments. Or you could choose a book that reflects a special place to you both. This could be from a place where you met, a place you will visit on your honeymoon or even a place that you both dream about visiting. But rest assured as time goes by, this book will take on more meaning that just a guest book.

Another great idea is to create your own picture book. Put some one in charge of taking Polaroid photos of guests, fixing them into a blank album and letting the guests leave their well wishes next to their photographs. We have seen the same concept done with all of the components for this placed in a beautiful basket and passed from table to table allowing guests to take the photos of each other. That was a lot of fun and very special for the bride and groom.

A very unique idea for the wine loving couple is to select a magnum size bottle of the wine or champagne that you will be serving at your wedding as the guest book. You will want to provide either a gold or silver fluid marker that dries on the bottle. A magnum size bottle will provide ample space for all to sign.

So there are just a few ideas to help you create unique touches to your wedding and to help you make your wedding elegant.

Book Review For "My Sister is a Werewolf"

By Steph Burkhart Platinum Quality Author

Kathy Love is back with her fourth installment in the Young Series, "My Sister is a Werewolf." Elizabeth Young has just been reunited with her vampire brothers, but she's got secrets of her own. The biggest one? She's a werewolf. Love's quick pacing keeps the reader on their toes as they devour Elizabeth's story.

Elizabeth, also known as Lizzie to her brothers, has gone to live in a small town in West Virginia with her brother, Christian. She's a research scientist with a lab in her barn. Elizabeth is working on a cure for lycanthropy along with the help of her mentor, Dr. Fowler. After realizing another serum of hers has failed, Lizzie goes to hang out at Christian's bar.

Jensen Adler is a veterinarian who has just recently returned to town. He's out on a date with some of his friends when Lizzie walks into the bar. The minute their eyes connect, there's a chemistry neither can deny. Jensen ditches his pals and leaves the bar with Lizzie. They have a wild night of lovemaking in his truck. Lizzie's quick to leave, embarrassed by how bold she was with Jensen.

Despite the suddenness of their encounter, Jensen is deeply attracted to Lizzie. He wants to see her again, but she tries to avoid him. Lizzie wages a war between her heart and mind. She's never been attracted to a man the way she is to Jensen, but he's a human and she's a werewolf. Lizzie thinks it won't work between them.

Jensen determinedly pursues Lizzie and she can't deny her heart. Their coming together is a powerful lovemaking act. They christen his kitchen table and her house. Finally, Lizzie tries one last desperate time to push Jensen away with a cold, impersonal note. He goes a date with another woman. When Lizzie spies them at the bar, she breaks down. Jensen takes the other woman home and goes back to the bar. Lizzie gives into her heart and agrees to date Jensen.

Things get complicated when Brody, Lizzie's old mate, shows up wanting to get back together with her. Brody's stalking threatens to expose Lizzie's secret. When Jensen learns his lover is a werewolf, will he embrace her love or deny her?

Once again, Kathy Love weaves a suspenseful paranormal romance. Her characters are rich and dynamic. The reader wants to see Jensen with Lizzie even though he's human. Love's dialogue is engaging and modern. Her writing is crisp. Love writes in a "Lonesome Dove" point of view with no clear divisions or line breaks in perspective. This can be disconcerting for some readers. The love scenes sizzle with vivid description. "My Sister is a Werewolf" is a riveting romantic escape.

7 Tips on How to Write a Book

By Carol Denbow

1. Write your book. Whether it's non-fiction or fiction, Fantasy, Autobiography, Crime or Mystery, just write what you feel. Never worry about editing as you go; as that will bury your creativity.

2. Find a quiet place to write. An extra bedroom, office, or even a garage (preferably heated), are all good places "away from it all." Never look for your muse where friends or family are always interrupting you.

3. Set time aside to write. It takes time to find your inspiration to write. It's not likely you will write well or accomplish much in a ten minute session. Allow yourself at least two hours to work on your writing project.

4. Choose you books topic according to demand. Are there a million books already written which follow the path of your story or subject? Is there even an audience out there who will buy your book? With nearly 30 books being released in the U.S. every hour of every day, the competition is fierce. If you plan to sell your book to the reading public, make sure you will have a customer base before you put your time and money into publishing a book.

5. Draw an outline for your book before you begin. A well drawn out outline will keep you focused on your total project. Outline your story or information. For fiction book writing, an outline of your plot, when to introduce your characters, and path of the story, that is, the beginning, middle, and ending placed into chronological order. For non-fiction book writing, the same applies. Organize your information into a logical and useful order.

6. Choose your title carefully. Not only is a catchy title a must, but for non-fiction and some fiction books, your title words will most likely be used as "key words" when a potential book buyer searches the Internet for a book similar to yours.

7. Once your book is complete, find a professional editor to fix your mistakes. Spell Check in your writing software is not enough to handle the job.

And Then There Came Twilight - A Book Review

By Patrick Garde

The author, Stephanie Meyer, actually had a hard time looking for a publishing company to print her masterpiece. But thanks to the Little, Brown Company which agreed to publish her work, the Twilight saga has exceptionally became a worldwide sensation. The first book, Twilight, has sold over millions of copies all around the world making it an instant hit. Countless girls and even guys of different ages have fallen head over heels in love with Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan.

I, too, can't get enough of the love story of Edward and Bella. Theirs is the ideal love story that every girl dreams of. All girls would swear to give up everything to have an Edward of their own.
Edward is not your typical boyfriend. He is considered to be the epitome of a perfect boyfriend one could ever imagine. Bella is very fortunate to have found him. Aside from being extremely handsome, Edward is also Bella's full-time protector, savior, and prince.

Bella, on the other hand, is the weakling type who needs constant protection from her beloved Edward. She has low self-confidence and thinks that she is just average and unworthy of Edward's love. A lot of girls could actually relate to Bella's character and would dream that they, too, would eventually find their own Edward.

I love the first book so much that I was able to read it thrice in a row and I can't stop myself from putting it away from the grasp of my hands. Every dialogue melted each girl's heart for sure, just as it melted mine. Though Edward is a vampire, he does everything to be worthy of Bella's love. He exerts so much effort to control himself so as not to hurt the love of his life.

Despite the fact that the story is exceptionally good and inspiring, the editing of the book was somehow flawed. Being a writing teacher that I am, I was a bit meticulous on the how the grammar, punctuations and some other writing details turned out. I guess the flaws were just typographical errors. But still, the proofreaders should have been more cautious and keen on the most trivial detail. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed reading all the books.

Twilight has been a phenomenal success. This teen love story between a human and a vampire won't be forgotten easily. The great love story shared by Edward and Bella would surely have a special place in every girl's heart.

Technical Instruction For Making Children's Book Illustrations

By Monika Vass

So, the first what I do is to DRAW! It sounds very simple , isn't it!? But seriously, first I imagine the picture in my head, and then create a rough with HB or 2B pencil (it depends what I have at home) on paper A4. When I feel ok, or sometimes fabulous (rarely) it is ready to clean-up, I use a non-permanent black pen, the exact name of it is Stabilo OHPen Universal. I tell because this is a wonderful pen, helped me a lot during work. After all these I scan the picture on 300 dpi in Photoshop as PSD format. In Photoshop the first thing what I do is to choose the right colors for the background of the illustration, because later they can't be changed so much, for example: the sky is blue, the tree and grass are green, the water can be dark blue, an so on...

Later it will be easier to compare the colors with the smaller details. Normally I use the paint bucket to fill the big areas of the picture, after with a tablet I can paint with the brush tool, to make some shadows - I use in multiply mode. But the most important in coloring is the bright-feeling when I am watching the picture, it shouldn't upset me.

Sometimes happens to me that I am not satisfied with my result, then I have import some different layers with other elements, like new characters or new objects into my children's book illustration.

Monika Vass is a professional children's book illustrator.Unlike other illustrators Monika do not draw super realistics illustrations, but cartoon styled, funny and bright colored ones, what children - between 0 and 10 - really loves. See the portfolio at http://www.monikabookillustrator.com

Book Promotion and Book Marketing With Online Book Reviews

By Cathy Goodwin Platinum Quality Author

Book promotion used to be all about book tours and book reviews in print media. These days the reviews that count are not all in the print media. They're mostly on online bookstores, especially the Amazon bookstore community.

Amazon has become so powerful that authors will invest scarce resources to get reviewed there. Many authors have false beliefs about what it takes to get an online book review. It's actually quite simple and straightforward.

As a prolific reviewer and a published author, I have experienced the process and have some tips to share with authors who want to make online reviews a key part of their book promotion.

First, I am horrified to learn that authors pay freelancers and agencies to write reviews for them. This is a huge waste of money. Instead, use your budget to send review copies to the most prolific reviewers in your genre. Read the reviewer's past reviews to discover his or her tastes. For example, if you have a book on parenting newborn babies, look at other books on this topic. Notice which reviewers seem genuinely interested. They'll probably be happy to review your book, too.

Anyway, one or two great reviews will not save your book. Even if one or two reviewers think your book ranks up there with War and Peace and the top-selling Stephen King novel, they can't save your book. It's the cumulative ratings that create viral marketing for your book.

Do not ask reviewers to write a review based on one chapter or a pdf version of the book. Send a hard copy of the whole book.

Once a reviewer agrees to consider reviewing your book, move on to your next marketing step. Do not hound the reviewer. Most prolific reviewers have backlog of books in the "To Review" pile. Some reviewers will choose not to review a book (especially one from a self-published author or small press) if they don't like the book. They reason that it's going nowhere,so why add to the author's pain?

And you cannot complain about your review. Believe it or not, the most convincing reviews are balanced. The puffy reviews are not taken seriously. Online readers are smart and their authenticity radar is finely-tuned.

Do not spend a lot of money on packaging. Skip the gold wrapping paper, ribbons and glossy flyers. I can't imagine how they would influence a reviewer.

In fact, the best way to get a handful of 4-star and 5-star reviews is to (drum roll, please!) write a good book. Nothing will compensate for a bad book, even if you somehow convince your friends and family to write glowing reviews. The online book community will pick up vibes from those reviews and you may be worse off. Readers actually complain, "The first 20 reviews look like they came from the author's mother."

You may be able to blast your way to best seller status with a big campaign. But you won't get authentic five-star reviews unless your book truly earns them.

And now I invite you to learn more about promoting your book through the online bookstore community. Visit http://www.BoostBusinessWithBookReviews.com and get tips and guidelines from Cathy Goodwin, Ph.D., a published author and prolific reviewer.

Audio Book Sales Are Booming - What Makes Them So Great?

By David Sharp

Audio books are now so popular that 28% of Americans are now listening to books on audio. The sales of audio books have increased over 12% in the last two years and in 2007 exceeded the 1 billion dollar mark.

Let us see if we can itemize the benefits of buying an audio edition as opposed to the printed book.

Firstly: They are a great time saver due to the fact that you can listen to them just about anywhere and anytime even when doing other things. I personally like to listen to my favorite audiobook whilst driving to and from work and have used this time to further my education, which in my particular case is learning foreign languages. But you don't have to be driving to listen to you favorite book, you could be out walking the dog, cycling, exercising or doing just about anything. Well not quite anything, it would be a bit difficult to listen to your favorite audio book and watch television at the same time.

This brings us to our second benefit: That is simply that most people love reading but don't have that much time. By listening to audio when you would not be able to read, for example when driving, then you are making good use of otherwise dead time.

If you are ambitious and want to educate yourself to get ahead in your chosen career then using your commuting time and listening to audio on your mp3 player or ipod is a good use of otherwise dead time.

Thirdly: I know this may seem fairly obvious but audio books are absolutely great for blind people or people with impaired vision. With audio anyone with any form of disability can enjoy a book whenever they want.

By listening to spoken books people with visual impairment can learn new hobbies and help to educate themselves and simply enjoy listening to their favorite book.

Fourthly: For people recovering in hospital or even older people who may have problems actually holding a book then the obvious solution would be an audio book.

If we look closer we can find even more benefits of listening to our favorite book on audio, such as helping children with there literacy, but it looks like the spoken word as opposed to the written word is now here to stay with more and more people everyday exploring the exciting world of audio books.

David Sharp runs Very Best Audio Books and invites you to check out his regular special offers from a range of over 8000 of the most popular audio titles, here at:

By Manish Chunawala

Analysis Book is one which guides students, wanting to become analysts in their respective fields, and teaches them the know-how of the subject. Analysis is a diverse subject, and there are many different fields attached to it, but the rules and basic techniques for all remain the same. These books help students in their analysis and help them keep a regular and orderly record of their analysis.

Book analysis refers to the task of studying and reviewing a book for the purpose of understanding its contents. Mainly analysis is done of those books which are written by new authors in the writing Industry in order to check the congruency and coherency of the content as well to check the usage of the English Language.

Those books which pass the analysis test may then be released or published into the market. All the books which appear for the analysis test are recorded in a records register or some record book for the sake of avoiding multiple testing of the same book. This prevents duplicate records and hence prevents confusion.

There are many different record books available in the market today. In all these books, one can find almost every observation, discovery, invention, important events, etc. which have been recorded or were worth recording, till date. Book Review Of "The New Mandarins Of American Power" By Allex Callinicos

By Mahmoud Arghavan

Alex Callinicos is professor of Politics at the University of York and also a member of the Central Committee of Socialist Workers Party and Professor of European Studies at Kings College London. His publications include Trotskyism (1990), The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx (1999), New Mandarins of American Power (2001), Anti-capitalist manifesto (2003). The fact that his field of expertise is politics and international relations might make his analyzes of the American politics and decision makers more reliable. Nevertheless his Marxist orientation makes his critique of the American capitalism to some extent biased.

As the name of the book shows this book is about new players of the American scenario for the world including US itself. Callinicos models his book on Noam Chomsky's American Power and the New Mandarins (1969). Chomsky's book was an intensive critique of the mainstream, liberal intellectuals named the "new mandarins", who provided the ideological cover for the Vietnam War. But the main Callinicos' concern is war in Iraq, not the Vietnam War. The mandarins that Callinicos discusses are not the liberal apologists for imperialism. They are the group of right-wing Republicans (Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, Perle, etc.) who run the US government.

This book offers a critical analysis of the global strategy pursued by the Bush administration since 11 September 2001 and it interestingly starts not from its first page but from its cover. The photo on the cover of the book showing American leadership in a hierarchical form (from the left to right: George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney; Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice) who have been members of the war council connotes that US is directed by these figures. Place of the session (White House, Washington) and also its date (April 2003) is so meaningful for the reader who looks at the book more precisely. This cover illustrate that new mandarins of American power who are designing the global scene according the pattern of exercising this power, are these four figures.

Conquest of Iraq

Conquest of Iraq and removal of Saddam Hussein by the American and British troops is fair to call a new type of imperial expansionism by the world power in a new form. This kind of expansionism, created the fear of the United States under George W. Bush that was determined to use the military might of the Pentagon to impose its will.

In his book, Alex Callinicos tries to explore the real meaning of the Bush Doctrine by focusing on the rhetorical justifications of the 'war on terrorism' and analyses the strategy of the Republican neoconservatives who now dominate American foreign policy and their main target is to use US military supremacy to impose their will upon the opposing countries and also their competitors (Germany, France, Russia and China) behind the 'war on terrorism' project. The Bush's administration's decision makers and ruling class has designed a "grand strategy" that includes facing down rivals, reordering the Middle East, removing the threat of terrorist attack, ensuring their oil supplies, and so on.

In renewal of the 20th century domination of capitalist imperialism that was well-known as American century, Callinicos argues these neoconservative mandarins seek a 'Project for the New American Century' to perpetuate the global domination of US-style neo-liberalism. Callinicos through a Marxist perspective looks at the American contemporary political history of imperialism and warns about quasi-religious overtones that "Nemesis awaits the 'democratic imperialists' in the Pentagon... The only question concerns the form that retribution will take".

In comparison between US today and British Empire of the 19th century, Callinicos concludes that because of the development of technology and communicational means the current situation is different from that situation. Multinationals, trade patterns and other forms of interdependence makes the current situation very different. On the one hand the US is a "hyper-power" presiding over an "imperialism of free trade", but then again the US is in economic decline and democracy is difficult to distinguish from the "older forms of colonialism".

By emphasizing on the geo-strategy of Bush's administration, Callinicos argues that this strategy has in its sights the major rivals of the United States and "the underlying tensions burst to the surface" over Iraq.

Looking throughout a Marxist theory of imperialism, he believes that imperialism is based on the development of the capitalist mode of production. "Its central claim was that, in unifying the world, capitalism created a highly unequal world dominated by a handful of Great Powers that competed both economically and militarily. He says this "Marxist" theory is superior because it treats "the diplomatic and military conflicts among states as instances of the more general process of competition that drives capitalism". The Bolsheviks recognized that "in the course of the nineteenth century two hitherto relatively autonomous processes - the geopolitical rivalries among states and economic competition between capitals - increasingly fused. "According to the discussion of the Callinicos, the Republican "new mandarins" are realistic, hard-nosed ideological class warriors for their own bourgeoisie. He demonstrates that the Bush doctrine is connected with the spread of neo-liberalism which focuses on the democracy promotion around the world and global capital. The US has supported many past dictators--including Saddam Hussein--and continues to do so where it wants to protect its economic interests. So the Karimov regime in Uzbekistan was the lucky recipient of $189 million US aid in 2002 despite interning up to 7,000 political prisoners, practicing torture and rigging trials. Callinicos also shows the connection between free market 'democracy' and privatization, and quotes Arundhati Roy as saying, 'Democracy has become Empire's euphemism for neo-liberal capitalism'.

In chapter 1 the author mentioned that George W. Bush after 11 September proclaimed itself to be at war. Secondly the administration defined this war in Manichean terms: 'This will be a monumental struggle between good and evil,' said George W. Bush on 12 September 2001. Terrorism and 'war on terror' was his justifications for this war. Calling Iran, Iraq and North Korea as 'axis of evil' reminded implicitly the Axis that bound together Germany, Japan and Italy during the Second World War. Destroying the Weapon of Mass Destruction and Democracy promotion were the causes of this definition.

Chapter 2, 'The cultists of eternal war', explaining the Bush's doctrines of pre-emptive acts against the countries that he claimed are supportive of terrorism.

In chapter 3 which name is 'The grand strategy of the American empire' and has three parts , Callinicos considered American foreign policy during the post cold war era and explains the usages of American military power at this era that in some of them US had to confront European countries.

'The geopolitics of oil' that is topic of the chapter 4, implies the subject of discussion of the chapter. This chapter is a documented repetition of the claims of Anti-American intellectuals, politicians and associations that believe energy resources are the main causes of American war specifically its war in Iraq. For them domination upon the Iraq's oil have been the real motive for Americans to wage another war on terrorism.

In chapter 5 with topic of 'Collision of Empires', Callinicos discusses the main feature of American empire in comparison with the ancient and also new empires and different kinds of imperialisms and colonialisms that have been exercised by the global power..

All in all, this book is a qualified book for the students and even professors whose field of study is American politics and foreign policy. For the students of American Studies, this is very helpful book to understand the logic of American politicians and decision makers that play a great role id the global scene to form world order in favor of American interests.

Noam Chomsky's opinion about this book is completely indicative to see the value of Callinicos book: 'Deeply informed, balanced, and full of insights, this perspective inquiry explores the rational basis for the aggressive unilateralism of the Bush administration that has frightened much of the world, arguing plausibly that it "is based on a largely accurate reading of the long-term economic and geopolitical threats facing US capitalism". It more than fulfills its goal of contributing to "an understanding of the strange and frightening world" that is taking shape.'

Book Lists - Why Most Are Terrible

By Cesar Botello

People getting into reading for the first time are always looking for a list of good books to get them started.

There are many reasons why popular book lists are a terrible idea. You shouldn't bother with them. If you do, you risk losing all that new found motivation to read.

Here are just a few of the reasons:

1. It's all About Ego

Most book lists are exercises in chest pounding by intellectually insecure people. The authors of most of these lists offer books that are not necessarily good per se, but books that will, in the opinion of these simple minded idiots, make the creator of the list seem intelligent and well read.

How else to explain Ulysses, by James Joyce, To kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, or The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, appearing at the top of most lists of the best books of all time?

Ulysses is unreadable, To Kill a Mockingbird couldn't be more boring, and the Catcher in the Rye would have died in obscurity long ago if it weren't for its connection to the assassination of John Lennon.

2. Confusing mastery of the craft, with readable output

Some lists creators confuse genius with effectiveness. The purpose of fiction is to create an experience. Readers identify with characters and find themselves carried off from their every day troubles. Novels fulfill our need for escapism. We live vicariously through well constructed characters and make the character's troubles our own. Add to this a well plotted, well told story and we have a winner.

This is all most people really want out of fiction. And it doesn't matter if we're talking about a high quality sophisticated literary novel, or some vapid ephemeral bestseller. Most readers can appreciate a well turned phrase. But if there's no story and the characters are bores, the reader will move on.

This is why Tom Clancy, whose prose is barely literate, has more readers for one of his worse novels, than James Joyce has readers for his entire body of work. Sure many have bought Joyce's books over the years, but how many have actually read them? Not many.
The point I'm trying to make is that genius is not enough.

My first time at a Japanese restaurant, the chef walked over to our table and started performing these amazing tricks. He was slicing and dicing, and things were flying all around me. There was fire and sparks, and he made eggs dance on his spatula. He juggled steaks and salt shakers, and he handled his knife like a Samurai.

It was an awesome thing to watch. This guy was truly a master chef.

My mouth just kept watering. I was starving. But when I took my first bite, the food sucked. I mean it really sucked. It was awful. The rice was too salty and the steak tasted like chewed bubble gum.

So who cares if the author of a book can write fifty page sentences, use allegory and symbolism while making obscured literary references? It's a neat trick, but if the end result is unreadable, we shouldn't waste our time. Let's leave those works to the academic pinheads that place them on lists and try to pass them off to the rest of us as required reading.

3. Publishing is a Business.

There are also those who make up reading lists in order to create hype for substandard books that aren't selling. Hey, I don't blame them. Publishers have to make a living, and half of getting your books sold is advertising.

We've all been taken in by an overly hyped movie. But a movie only steals a couple of hours of our lives. A bad book is a costlier time investment.

So yes, publishers have the right to try and hype their books. But that doesn't mean we should let them rope us into their trap.

A dead giveaway of hype, is hearing comparisons to famous works. Being described as the next Da Vinci Code, or the next Harry Potter, only means the book can't stand on its own merits. The publishers are hoping that by making the association some unsuspecting readers will get ensnared.

4. Bestseller Lists Just list Bestsellers.

Not all bestsellers are good books, but all good books are bestsellers. I forget where I first heard this incisive observation but it couldn't be truer. Well okay, one can debate the second part of that statement, but the first part is certainly true.

Bookshelves are littered with so called bestsellers not worth the paper they were printed on. If you're looking for a good read, picking something just because it's on a bestseller list may not be the best strategy.

Here's the problem. Once we have had a good experience with an author, we're more likely to give their next book a try. But even the best of writers put out the occasional dud. And some authors' output is so erratic that every book is a gamble.

Because we are willing to give our favorite authors the benefit of the doubt, their new books, regardless of quality, will sell and sell. Only word of mouth will stop the momentum of a bad one.

By then, however, the dud is also a bestseller.

So if you're coming to a popular author for the first time, you have to be careful. The book being a bestseller means nothing. You never know what you're going to get.

5. Lists Based on Awards and Prizes are the Worst

Awards, like the Pulitzer and the National Book award, tend to be capricious in the extreme when it comes to choosing recipients.

Sometimes their choices are dead on. Other times, they suck so bad that it's almost impossible to get passed the first chapter.

Take a look at the Pulitzer. The Road by Cormac McCarthy was an amazing pick. But then there's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. Come on. This book is just too painful to get through. I can only imagine what someone that doesn't speak fluent Spanish (plus some serious street slang and Spanglish) must have to endure to understand half of it. I understood it and all I have to say is, Pulitzer People what were you thinking? Don't get me wrong, the book does have its merits, but the Pulitzer Prize, come on.

6. Is all about the Genre.

In the end good book lists really come down to genre. A book can be a true masterpiece but if it's in a genre that you don't enjoy reading, it's going to be boring.

I'm not particularly fond of hardcore fantasy books, those that contain elves and dwarfs and magicians. When I read the Tolkien series, I found it painfully boring. It was a nightmare to get through. Yet it has stood the test of time. And after Hollywood spent millions in three movies that, I was sure would flop, they succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. They sold and sold and sold. And even I liked them.

If you're considering following a reading list of so called classics and good books, you want to follow one targeted to a genre you enjoy. That will slash way down the chances of you getting stuck with a dud.

If you love to read, but hate getting stuck with the boring stuff, you'll love us. If your time is limited, and you don't want to waste it searching for a good read but just want to get down to reading, we are the answer.

We at Couldn't Put It Down do all the hard work for you. We read everything we can get our hands on, but only review those books that we're comfortable recommending. Only the good stuff makes it on our site. You don't even have to bother reading the review. If it's on Couldn't Put It Down then it's good.

Book Review - My Body Belongs to Me by Jill Starishevsky

By Susan Heim Platinum Quality Author

Sexual abuse. It's probably one of the last subjects we want to discuss with our children-or even think about ourselves-but experts say that it's essential to teach our children that certain parts of their body are private. Unfortunately, most children who are being sexually abused fail to tell someone, perhaps because their abuser says it's a secret, warns that someone will suffer if they tell, or convinces the child that he or she is at fault. So, how do we talk about abuse with our children without scaring them or giving them the impression that adults are bad?

Jill Starishevsky, an Assistant District Attorney in New York City who has prosecuted hundreds of sex offenders, has written a book to help parents bring up the delicate subject of sexual abuse with their children. My Body Belongs to Me combines simple, rhyming words with lovely drawings to help children understand, "This is my body, and it belongs just to me." The book also instructs kids to tell someone when they're touched inappropriately and reassures them that "they did nothing wrong" when abuse occurs.

In approaching the subject of sexual abuse with our children, the author suggests:
  • Use this book as a tool to start a conversation and continue to address the subject periodically so kids remember the message.
  • Teach children the proper terms for parts of the body so they feel comfortable talking about them.
  • Ask your child "What if?" questions such as, "What if someone told you it was a secret?" Help them to get to the answer of telling another adult.
  • Teach children that your family does not "do secrets." If someone encourages them to keep secrets, they should respond by saying that their family tells each other everything.
  • Encourage your kids to talk to you whenever they feel scared or uncomfortable. This will help them to know they can always confide in you.
  • Let your children know they should trust their feelings. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't, and they should tell someone.

In addition to these tips, My Body Belongs to Me also includes a letter to parents and resources for more information. The author has an accompanying website at www.MyBodyBelongsToMe.com through which you can order the book. I highly recommend it for all families with children between the ages of 3 and 10.

Book Review of the Adventures of Pinocchio

By Shawn B Platinum Quality Author

The complete 'Adventures of Pinocchio' as presented in this version, are but a far cry from the dimmed recollections of the story that we remember as children of a small wooden puppet that is afflicted with a nose growing problem every time he lies! In this version - a complete translation from the original Italian - nose length is but a minor and trivial occurrence in the life of a wooden puppet brought to life by the skills of its carver, Mr. Gepetto.

From the marionettes first cry through a block of wood to his conception as a fully mobile puppet, Pinocchio has a mind of his own - a mind bound on living his life with stubbornness, strong will, sauciness, silliness, and lack of strength of character! Little Pinocchio is hell bent and bound to doing things the way he wants to do them without any regard to obedience or gratitude towards his creative father Gepetto. As gumballs are chewed and turned into bubbles that are blown large and then burst into a sticky mess on a child's face, so are Pinocchio's adventures blown from a sweet and tempting delight into disastrous outcomes that are always gently and thoroughly cleaned and restored by his gracious father.

This story puts a strong magnifying glass to the behavioral tendencies of strong willed, disobedient children showing them as they are - not just as endearing and lovable, but as personalities that need to be carved, molded, taught, disciplined, rebuked, and yes, loved and restored into the family unit. This book should be a 'must read' for every parent setting out to raise a little 'puppet' of their own, and a 'read aloud' must at that!

Book Review For "Twilight"

By Steph Burkhart Platinum Quality Author

At "Twilight" those paranormal forces beyond our control come out, and Isabella Swan (Bella) must suspend all reasonable belief to accept those forces exist - and to fall in love. Meyer's writing is brisk, easy to read, and readers will discover they've turned over more pages then they've realized.

The story actually starts a bit slowly as seventeen-year-old Bella moves to Forks, Washington, to live with her father. As she establishes her routines, she notices a strange family of teenagers, the Cullens. They are all beautiful with pale skin and chameleon-like eyes. They also tend to stick to themselves. Bella is surprised by Edward's initial cold treatment of her. She doesn't know what to make of it - or him. It's only when he saves her life with his lightening quick reflexes and unexpected strength does she begin to think there might be something unusual with him. When her Indian friend, Jacob, tells her about the "cold ones," his story inspires her to do some research. With all the evidence in front of her, Bella concludes Edward is a vampire.

When Bella confronts him, he admits it. He's fallen in love with her and tried to push her away, but he can't fight the attraction anymore. Edward gives into his love for her and Bella gives into her love for him as well. There's no physical consummation of their love, it's a love cultivated through feelings and emotions which provides an intense high for both.

Edward discusses some myths and truths about the vampire world with Bella. He tells her how Carlisle created him during the Flu outbreak in 1917. Carlisle, Edward, and the vampires who live with them have learned to curb their blood lust for human blood, but some vampire covens and families haven't. To that end, Edward's family meets three vampire strangers while playing a game of baseball and one, James, decides to track Bella. Edward and his family try their best to protect her, but James tracks Bella to Phoenix, Arizona. James does bite Bella, but Edward draws the venom out of her. The book ends with Edward taking Bella to the prom. Bella asks for the bite of immortality from Edward who refuses to give it.

The book is written in the first person from Bella's perspective. Meyer does a great job staying in perspective, but there are times when Bella's determination crosses the line to irritating whininess, and it's hard to understand how Edward finds this trait of hers attractive.

Edward is "tempted" over and over again to taste Bella's blood and he does an admirable job holding his temptation in check. In that regard, that aspect of his character wrestling with temptation seemed a non-issue since temptation really wasn't an issue.

The book is geared for a young adult audience. The plot comes together well. It's easy to read and a page-turner. While there are some suspenseful elements, especially with James on the hunt for Bella, toward the end they are overshadowed by the melodrama teen angst that emotes throughout. Meyer does create an original world and gives her vampires twists and nuances of their own. "Twilight" is an interesting read just to devour Meyer's creative spin on the vampire world.

Book Review - Tall Tales by Karen Day

By Cammie Moise Platinum Quality Author

Do you remember the first book you read that was so great you did not want to stop reading? Tall Tales by Karen Day is that book for my daughter, Taylor. I had been struggling with her every day after school to read for 30 minutes.

She recently decided that she wanted to read the nominees for the Bluebonnet Award so she could vote. The first book on the list that she chose to read was Tall Tales by Karen Day. She started coming home after school and instead of turning on the TV, she sat on the couch reading. I could not believe it. She loved the book and did not want to stop reading. She finally understood what I have been talking about and why I love to read.

Meg has a secret and to keep anyone from finding out, she lies about her family life. This secret also means the family moves a lot. All Meg really wants is a best friend. What happens when she finally finds one? Grace is becoming a best friend but Meg is always making excuses as to why they can't ever go to her house. Eventually, events take place that force Meg to admit the family secrets. Grace still wants to be best friends. The journey of finding a best friend, opening up and being vulnerable, also causes Meg to be strong and stand up for what she believes. This is a tough subject and tears were shed while reading.

I highly recommend this book for 4th grade and up.

Cammie's blog site http://www.MomsMaterial.com gives moms ideas they want. She talks about books for kids and moms, party ideas, school, parenting, great gifts ideas and how to look good doing it all.

The Expectant Father - Book Review

By Adam Hansen

"The Expectant Father" was the first book I purchased when I found out I was going to be a new dad. Written by two magazine and newspaper contributors, Armin A. Brott and Jennifer Ash, the book lays down a solid foundation for clueless dads-to-be looking to grasp the fundamentals of their new situation.

The authors do a really great job of covering basic pregnancy information from the man's point of view. The book is broken down by months; each month's chapter will have a short section on the things you, your baby and your partner may all be going through. In addition to that there will be a subject high lighted in that chapter. Topics that are covered are: paying for the birth, child and college, communication, telling the world, work and family changes, the birth and many others.

The book is not written by medical professionals which gives the book a very familiar and conversational feel. You get the feeling that it's more like one of your buddies talking to you than a biology text book. The book isn't devoid of valuable medical input though. The authors site and incorporate tons of information from doctors, midwives, psychologists and others. This combined with the relatively short 198 pages makes it an easy read.

One thing that I found distracting was that the book is organized by months while everything in pregnancy is calculated by weeks. Yeah the math isn't hard, but sometimes big things can happen from week to week. Also you get a lot of information thrown at you that may not apply right away. For example; the authors delve deep into college funds in the second month's chapter. This wave of information sometimes was too much to completely absorb and I find myself often re-reading chapters when the month actually arrives.

In conclusion, "The Expectant Father" is a great book if you just found out you are going to be a new dad. It gives you a good base to start off with, but will not be the only baby book you need. I recommend combining this book with a woman's preganancy week-by-week book (that I am sure your partner has already) to get a better picture of the entire pregnancy. All in all this book is worth the money and does a fantastic job of introducing you to the wide world of pregnancy.

Stuck in a blizzard, the town's top cop, Nathaniel Peck, comes to her rescue. Marty's immediately distrustful of him. He hurt her pride back in high school with a mean-spirited kiss. Nate appears to be a changed man. He takes being a cop seriously and he strives to be an honorable police officer. He's remorseful for treating Marty so badly in high school, but Marty is a hard sell.

Nate finally gets Marty to go out for a cup of coffee. Marty slowly eases into a dating relationship with Nate. She's still a little afraid that he might be tricking her. When she discovers from her sisters that he was attacked while sleeping and his knee was injured, Marty starts to soften toward him.

While out on a date with Nate, Jared Nye, another old classmate comes onto Marty with a forceful kiss. Nate breaks it up and takes Marty to his place. They make love, spending the next twenty-four hours trapped by a snowstorm, getting to know each other well.

Once they're able to get out, an old school chum, Josie, who knows Jared and Nate, tells Marty that Nate is using her - again. Josie has been put up to this by Jared. Marty can't bear the thought of Nate using her and leaves. Nate goes after Marty once he finds out the truth - that Josie and Jared set him up. Can he convince Marty that his love is real?

Love's writing is sharp. Marty's life as a supermodel, while glamorous, lacks substance. Her vulnerability will touch the heartstrings. Nate is a likable guy who has changed his ways and readers will find themselves rooting for Marty and Nate. The dialogue is crisp and spirited. The love scenes are visual and emotional. Love does write in a "Lonesome Dove" point of view which switches with no clear breaks or division. This might be disconcerting for some readers. The plot moves forward seamlessly. "Wanting Something More" is a delicious way to spend the weekend.

Book Review - Den of Lions by Alison Winfree Pickrell

By Ronald Standerfer

A Powerful Story of One Man's Courage and Sacrifice

It was an act of incredible courage and sacrifice; one of heroic proportions. But Timothy Wrenn was not a heroic figure; far from it. Yet, during a moment of divine inspiration he stepped outside the fabric of his everyday, humdrum existence and did the unthinkable; he took his entire savings and purchased another man's freedom. This is the essence of Alison Winfree Pickrell's poignant and extremely well written book, "Den of Lions."

In the beginning of the book, Pickrell prepares the reader for what's to come by painting a careful, thoughtful portrait of Timothy Wrenn. He was a small man, scarcely noticed or remembered in crowds, whose entire life rotated around the dual axis his small, neatly-kept apartment and the library in which he worked. His parents were deceased and he had no brothers, sisters, or close friends. Still, his was not Thoreau's "life of quiet desperation," but rather, a life of quiet acceptance. The only challenge to his well ordered but lonely existence was occasional bouts of asthma which he managed to control with medication.

Although Timothy had no close friends, it is not fair to say that he had no friends at all. In particular, there were two men upon whom he lavished all the kindness and concern normally associated with close friendship. One was a dwarf he called Littlebit, and the other, a large man of uncertain appearance named Hummer. Both were frequent visitors to a small park at the town's center where they allowed Timothy to give them freshly made sandwiches, which they accepted with shy nervousness like frightened animals. As it turned out, his encounters with these poor souls were harbingers of what was to come.

One afternoon, one of Timothy's co-workers invited him to accompany her to a local carnival. He reluctantly accepted and by doing so, his life changed forever. It was there he and his companion encountered a filthy, pitiful creature in chains being exhibited in a freak show. Timothy was shocked and revolted by the sight of this mistreated human being and his image stayed with him long after he returned home. Worse yet, he found himself in an internal dialogue in which God seems to be urging him to help the man. But what could he do? To free him would undoubtedly cost him a lot of money; more money than he could possibly afford. But in the end, Timothy admitted to himself that he could free him, if he used the money he was saving for a vacation to Greece; a vacation during which he fantasized that he would meet the love of his life. In an act of bravery born of desperation, he took the money, went to the carnival, and bought the man's freedom.

Pickrell's description of what happened next is painful to read in parts, but her descriptions and dialogue are powerful and ring absolutely true. Timothy's new friend, whom he calls Daniel, is hopelessly retarded, has no communicative skills, and no knowledge of basic hygiene. But Timothy soldiers on, measuring success by tiny steps; all the while going to work as usual and hiding Daniel from the outside world. But eventually, his asthma condition worsens and it becomes apparent that he cannot carry on. When this happens, things begin to fall apart and Timothy's story ends in a way so moving and heartbreaking that it cannot fail to soften the heart of the most hardened reader.

"Den of Lions" is a simple, elegantly-written book that sends a powerful lesson to its readers; a lesson that is inscribed on the back cover: "Courage isn't always what you think it is."

Little Stories by Jeff Roberts - Book Review

By Paige Lovitt Platinum Quality Author

Outskirts Press (2008)
ISBN 9781432727277

"Little Stories" contains a collection of eleven short stories about human nature. The author, Jeff Roberts, did an incredible job with writing these tales. He brings each one to life and is able to vividly describe them in a way that makes them appear real. The stories range from a tale about a mischievous boy who gets in trouble, to one about an elderly grandfather who is preparing to die as his great-granddaughter is welcomed into the world. Other stories involve relationship issues and making decisions without integrity.

The personal issues tend to deal with being disappointed about the ending of the relationship. Loneliness and betrayal are often felt. However, there is a feeling that the persons experiencing the loss of a relationship will find their own strengths in the end that don't involve being with someone else. This comes from our evolution through personal growth.

I really enjoyed these compelling stories. I found myself wishing that there were more. It really takes a lot of talent on the part of an author to be able to fully pull a reader into a story, especially when it is a short story. Mr. Roberts is an exceptionally talented writer. I was very impressed with his ability to write. I wish I had adequate words to truly describe his talent, but I don't. I suspect he could easily come up with them though. While I am sure that these tales took a great deal of work to write, especially since he wrote them as a college student, his words do appear like they just flowed across the page.

I am trying to decide which story had the most impact on me. I think it would be the last one, called "Cosette," that deals with the loss of a precious pet. Having been in this situation several times myself, I found myself really feeling for the character as he had to deal with the loss for himself and for his daughter. This story was especially poignant to me because it brought back many of my memories of being in this situation. Fortunately for me, I had to deal with them alone, and have not had to watch a child suffer through it.

I think that "Little Stories" by Jeff Roberts will make an excellent addition to the collections of people who enjoy quality fiction. It would also be a great book for a college-level reading course and it would be a great selection for reader's groups. I truly hope that more stories will be forthcoming from Mr. Roberts.

Book Review - Bulletproof Your Job

By Tai Goodwin

If your job is on the line, Bulletproof Your Job, is the first book you want to reach for. This book offers over fifty practical tactics, organized into four simple strategies that you can employ to help increase your chances of being the last to go and decrease your chances of being next to go. Even if your job isn't on the line the author offers sound advice for anyone looking to make themselves a candidate for most valuable player in their company. In short, employing these tactics will help foster a positive work environment no matter what the economy or labor market look like.

The four "simple" strategies: Be Visible, Be Easy, Be Useful, and Be Ready, each outline a number of tactics organized into easy to read and in some cases entertaining sections. I truly enjoyed reading the "True Story" and "Just So You Know", call outs.

Highlights:

  • The Be Visible section offers practical heard before advice presented with an honesty and frankness that makes it less easy to take the information for granted. One of my favorite tactics comes from the Be Ready chapter: Help the People in Your Network. This bit of advice immediately connected with the value I place on investing in other people - the old sowing and reaping principal.
  • And finally, Mr. Viscusi gets points for advocating social networking. His own True Story on page 142 is a perfect example of how savvy professionals are successfully leveraging networking 2.0 strategies.

Low-lights: If you've been questioning whether you want to stay in corporate America - this book is a nudge out the door. The bigger message of this book is that it's not enough to focus on being a doing a good job, there are all these other tactics you need to consider just to keep your spot in what for many is an increasingly draining rat race. A few of the tips he mentions remind me of this:

  • Be the mini me of your boss: Definitely a turn off for those of us who enjoy being ourselves. I can't imagine anything more insufferable than spending forty plus hours a week purposely putting on a façade just so I won't be fired. Support your boss, yes. Be his or her creepy clone - no.
  • I am also not a fan of his idea about stress at work. I agree about not complaining about it, but I am not a fan of just telling people to suck it up. It's true that every job has seasons or waves of stress, but if the stress is consistent and you have no means of managing it then it may just be time to find a new gig. In my opinion, good companies understand that creating high stress environments is a sure way to increase two things: employee turnover and poor performance which impact customer satisfaction and eventually the bottom line.

Final Call:

Despite his apparent disregard for career coaches and those who use them, Mr. Viscusi offers down to earth, easily implementable tactics for his audience. I'll forgive him this oversight, highly recommending this book.

Book Review - The Tinen Killings by J D Solomon

By Ronald Standerfer

A Compelling Murder Mystery Left Over From the Civil War

It is April 1898 and America's eyes are focused on the new century and to the war with Spain that was sure to come. For many, the new century promised to be one of innovation and progress. Telephones and electricity were already making their appearance in homes and offices, and rumors abounded about the "horseless carriage" which would eventually make its appearance as well. But not all Americans were focused on the new century, or on the prospect of a war with Spain. Some lived their lives with one foot planted firmly in the dark days of the Civil War. Like Pat Tinen, for example; an aging Civil War officer and Union hero at Gettysburg who was living his final days in a National Soldiers' Home in Virginia. His was a life condemned to endless days of numbing boredom; until he learned that his son and daughter-in-law were brutally murdered. This is where J. D. Solomon's compelling and well written book "The Tinen Killings" begins.

The task of investigating the murder of Pat Tinen's son falls to Sheriff Jed Roberts, the son of a Confederate officer killed in Pickett's Charge. Unlike Tinen, Roberts has no real interest in the past, but instead, has his eyes firmly on a future run for Congress. But the murder of Tinen's son has evoked such shock and outrage within the community that unless Roberts solves this brutal crime, his chances of being elected to Congress are slim.

Like most murder mysteries, the plot is complicated and riddled with inconvenient truths. For example, Tinen's son, a failed Klondike prospector, is murdered after a clumsy attempt to blackmail a powerful financier. The question is, of course, who is this financier and why was he being blackmailed? After a series of red herrings and false starts, Roberts deduces that his man is in Philadelphia, and that's where most of the story takes place. It is also the place where Roberts meets Tinen's estranged daughter, a clever and resourceful woman who proves to be enormously helpful in identifying the financier.

Meanwhile, the financier has his own troubles, caused by double-dealing dating back to the Civil War. As Roberts draws closer to his prey, the financier calls on a network of murderers and thieves in his employ to stop Roberts' investigation at all costs. It is this part of the book that is the most exciting and readable.

It is not often that a reader can take an enjoyable and informative journey through post Civil War American history while reading a page turning mystery rich with interesting characters and well written dialogues; but "The Tinen Killings" by J. D. Solomon does all that and more. It is a great read, and I highly recommend it.
