The complete 'Adventures of Pinocchio' as presented in this version, are but a far cry from the dimmed recollections of the story that we remember as children of a small wooden puppet that is afflicted with a nose growing problem every time he lies! In this version - a complete translation from the original Italian - nose length is but a minor and trivial occurrence in the life of a wooden puppet brought to life by the skills of its carver, Mr. Gepetto.
From the marionettes first cry through a block of wood to his conception as a fully mobile puppet, Pinocchio has a mind of his own - a mind bound on living his life with stubbornness, strong will, sauciness, silliness, and lack of strength of character! Little Pinocchio is hell bent and bound to doing things the way he wants to do them without any regard to obedience or gratitude towards his creative father Gepetto. As gumballs are chewed and turned into bubbles that are blown large and then burst into a sticky mess on a child's face, so are Pinocchio's adventures blown from a sweet and tempting delight into disastrous outcomes that are always gently and thoroughly cleaned and restored by his gracious father.
This story puts a strong magnifying glass to the behavioral tendencies of strong willed, disobedient children showing them as they are - not just as endearing and lovable, but as personalities that need to be carved, molded, taught, disciplined, rebuked, and yes, loved and restored into the family unit. This book should be a 'must read' for every parent setting out to raise a little 'puppet' of their own, and a 'read aloud' must at that!
