My favorite thing to do is travel. However, I am an average middle class gal who doesn't always have the funds to travel as much as I would like, so I have come up with some creative ideas which allow me to indulge in my travel desires.
Go at off-peak times
Sometimes there are risks involved such as hurricane season, but I highly recommend going to places in their off-peak times. You probably won't notice a huge difference in flights, but you will in hotels. I have seen hotels at a quarter of the price of what they are in peak season.
Some examples of this type of travel would be going to Mexico or Hawaii in the summer. Visit Chicago, London, or New York City in the winter. My husband and I went to London in the winter, and we only paid $500 for flight. Winter in London is much better than winter in Minnesota, so I was quite pleased.
Go after a hurricane or other "problem" in the area
I would never wish disaster on any area, but after a disaster, the city really needs people to put money back into their pockets, and hotels are desperate to get people to start coming back, so there are a lot of great deals. Also, you are doing something good to help stimulate their economy.
My husband and I went to Cancun 9 months or so after their big hurricane, and I got an amazing deal. We stayed at Dreams Cancun (all-inclusive) for 5 nights and got our flight for less than $1300. I have been a bit spoiled ever since.
Make friends and stay with them
If you love to travel, but don't think you can afford a hotel, stay in touch with friends all across the world. We have stayed with friends in both Chicago and London. It is fun to travel and spend time with our friends. The great thing about staying with friends is that they know the city, so they can give you an insiders view. Otherwise you may not get to experience the true aspects of that city. I always make sure to offer my long distance friends a place to because I know how much help that can be.
